Taking Care of Yourself When You’re in a Slump

·

, ,

I’m truly taking a moment to appreciate a break and the slow energy of this Saturday…

Like I mentioned in my previous post, last week and well, life in general, has been widely chaotic lately… yet I’m somehow stuck in a weird energetic slump and unable to navigate successfully forward in any direction I wish to go (i.e., reading goals, personal life goals, professional goals, etc.)

Maybe it’s been the fast-paced lifestyle I’ve lived for far too long or just an unfortunate collision of poorly timed events in life that has caused all to occur simultaneously and has left me buffering at 33%, indefinitely…

However despite the fatigue, obstacles and rejection, I’m really looking to overcome this slump, while also appreciating what this energetic low period is trying to teach me to look into (living a more present, slow paced and restorative life!)

So for today, let’s chat about how to get out of a slump when you’re stuck in one 😫

Whether it’s due to burnout or other reasons, it’s important to take care of yourself if you want to show up fully present for others. Remember to protect your inner peace and recognize these slumps as teachable moments, to check in with yourself and recalibrate.

I took the morning looking up some topics and ideas that sounded like good stepping stones to try while navigating ways to overcome this major bump in the road…

How to overcome a slump and restore your energy 🔋

Focus on your Basic NeEds 🥤

Addressing your basic needs… seems easy, right? Like getting enough proper sleep, eating healthy foods, and keeping yourself hydrated. That all seems simple enough, but while you’re going through extreme periods of burn-out and fatigue, you will lose motivation to maintain even your basic human needs…

So one of my top priorities at the moment is looking into a way to track and maintain these three basics:

Sleep Well + Eat Healthy + Drink H2O

As well as find ways to treat myself when I’ve achieved my daily amount to maintain motivation 👀

Prioritize Self Care 🧘🏻

Care for yourself by engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation (for me, those would be reading, spending time outdoors, slow paced activities, etc.)

I’m also going to make an effort to do more self-care evenings as part of my nightly rituals, with all the luxurious essentials, to recharge and reset my system into the ultimate Zen mode.

And lastly, I really want to start focusing on increasing my physical activities (like going on more walks, increasing my yoga class attendance…) and adding more intentional slow-paced activities into my weekly routine (like reading in the park, art & photography, and cross-stitching…)

Flo is the big sis you’ve always wanted and/or needed to help you empower your inner goddess!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the these two podcasts, during the best and the worst of my energy periods, as they give me that sense of wholesome connection and security through their inspiring and uplifting words – like a truly needed hug at times!

Tune in with besties Kristen and Alex to Oddvice where they navigate the highs and lows of life…

The one thing that drew me to them was their humble and empowering vibes, their inspirational and uplifting energy and that protective sister security our inner child could always use.

Due to intentionally changing my routine from being so conditionally helpless in my conquest to defeating my slump to being more empowered, I’m also encouraging myself to focus on being more compassionate and kind to my inner self, and shaping my inner dialogue to speak to a friend, not a foe.

[Ask yourself]
Would you speak to your friend like you speak to yourself?
If no, then change your self-talk.

As another recharger, I’m looking into signing up for volunteering opportunities this summer to meet people and navigate overcoming my social anxiety that has spiked in the recent years.

Set Achievable Goals 🎯

Baby steps. It’s about making things manageable to build momentum and confidence in one’s abilities to accomplish goals!

I used to get really excited about pre-planning my upcoming monthly TBRs, and set out to prep about 10 books for a monthly TBR list and whichever I got to read that month, that would be it. Then I started getting really into book clubs on Fable and wanting to participate with other amazing Fablers in the discussions, and so my TBRs became mostly upcoming book club reads.

Then I signed up for NetGalley and got super into requesting ARCs that sounded so enticing, so then my entire TBR grew exponentially… so fast forward, it’s May Spring 2025, I’m overstimulated with my pre-prep and with so many other intriguing options to pick from that I feel ultimately stuck and rushed, which hauls any ambition to proceed through the ones I’m currently reading 😧

To overcome this reading slump and work towards reading through my monthly lists, I’ve limited the amount of books I read at once so I can manageably achieve my monthly TBR goals! I’d still like to try to aim for 10 reads a month, but I never want to pressure myself to anything I find recreationally fulfilling (or else I’m adding unnecessary demands on my body)

At the moment, my plan is to maintain my velocity with my current reads, but by reading a max of three books at a time, one in each format (e.g., physical book, audiobook and eBook)

  2. This is all great advice. Thank you! I also work on being kind to myself during these slumps. That usually means allowing myself to do only what sounds good, which is usually nothing except enjoying a good book or show.
